A Southeastern Hospital: HIPAA Driving Security Upgrades

Need
Like many others in the health care industry, this major hospital is struggling to comply with the avalanche of HIPAA regulations.

The challenge for the hospital was how to effectively secure Telnet users and file transfers via FTP. Another broader requirement was how to ensure the privacy of sensitive transmitted information to authorized personnel outside the hospital? The IT organization's requirement was for a solution that was secure and also easy to implement. Other requirements were that the solution be cost effective and provide a definable ROI.

The technical challenges were that the solution had to work seamlessly with the various communication methods and protocols in use, and enable the hospital staff to encrypt sensitive attachments bound for lawyers and other hospitals without the users having to install any new software. These requirements were merely a subset of a much larger complexity of issues that centered on providing identification, encryption, digital signatures and data integrity for the entire hospital.

Solution
The Nomad Secure Access solution was selected for its ability to solve the secure Telnet and FTP needs from within its standard functionality. The hospital had Nomad SA implemented and running with a small set of users in a week, with plans being made to expand the implementation to other areas in the hospital. The challenge of ensuring the privacy of documents sent to third parties was addressed with Nomad SA's unique self-decrypting feature.
